Georgia forgot the old maxim that great powers don't commit suicide for their allies. Their government did a wonderful job blowing up any chance of joining NATO and tying in closer to the West with this stunt, not to mention the people who paid for it with their lives and livelihoods. Hard to imagine why nations go to war and governments are willing to risk everything on conflicts over such tiny parcels of land.

Not exactly sure what my stance on this topic is, but I'm glad the conflict seems about over now. Or at least in terms of aggression.

Okay, I've been reading a little more about it and here's what I've learned:

1. South Ossetia, a region in Georgia was pro-russia and wanted to break away.
2. S Ossetia and Georgia routinely engaged in artillery exchanges. After a very intense one recently, Georgia sent in troops.
3. Russia didn't like it so it invaded both S Ossetia and another pro-russian region of Georgia starting within a few hours after Georgia moved out.

Since this seems like a more complex situation than I first thought it was, I'm going to retract my original statement. However I still don't like what's going on or how anyone is acting.

By the way, Putin is effectively acting as head of state. Apparently he was behind a lot of the mobilization of the Russian forces.

Of course Putin is a bit suspicious.

His 2 terms are up, and HE STILL IS THE HEAD OF STATE. He still has a high influence in Russian politics and the prime minister is like a puppet ruler under Putin. I'm surprised if Putin wants to be prime minister again.

Georgia was in the wrong hoping that the US would stop Russia from getting involved.
